Have you ever woke up late in the afternoon, and felt guilty or ashamed for sleeping the day away? Have you ever been lectured for spending too much time dreaming away in bed by your friends, family, or significant other? Well, forget the criticism! Everything you thought you knew about being away in dreamland is now being proven wrong! New studies have revealed the secret, and hidden benefits of sleeping in. Research has revealed sleeping in is linked to creative genius. So, drop the guilt, and hit that snooze button one more time, your brain will thank you!
According to research published in The Huffington Post, those who deviate from the normal circadian rhythm are considered more intelligent, and imaginative. This finding is supported by research suggesting that those who create new evolutionary patterns (compared to those who stick with the normal patterns developed by our ancestors) are the most progressive.
It makes sense. After all, those who are the first to embrace change, are often more advanced and intelligent than their peers. According to researchers at the University of Madrid, after analyzing the sleeping patterns of 1,000 students, they found that those who went to bed later than their peers (and consequently woke up later) scored higher on inductive reasoning tests, a test normally associated with general intelligence.
Marina Giampietro, lead author of another study on men and women across all age spectrums, designed to measure creative problem solving, asserts that general creativity is derived from “the development of a non-conventional spirit” and “the ability to find alternative and original solutions,” as in, you guessed it, sleeping later than what is deemed socially acceptable. From Elite Daily:
IT’S ALL ABOUT WHAT YOU’RE DOING WITH THE TIME YOU HAVE. YES, EARLY BIRDS MIGHT BE MORE PRODUCTIVE, BUT LATE RISERS ARE MORE CREATIVE. EARLY RISERS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THOSE MORNING HOURS TO DO MUNDANE ACTIVITIES LIKE GO TO THE GYM, MAKE COFFEE AND GET TO WORK EARLY, BUT IT’S THE LATE SLEEPERS WHO REALLY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE NIGHT — THE SPECIAL TIME TO CREATE AND INVENT SOMETHING NEW.
There’s something to tell your boss the next time you’re ten minutes late.
