It was 1995 when U.K.-based artist William Utermohlen was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer is an extremely hard diagnosis and disease for anyone, as it attacks on both body and spirit, but before his death in 2007, Utermohlen created a heart-wrenching final series of self-portraits over a roughly 5-year period in order to document the gradual decay of his mind due to this degenerative disease.

An essay by the artist’s widow Patricia explains perfectly why these images speak to the heart; “In these pictures we see with heart-breaking intensity William’s efforts to explain his altered self, his fears and his sadness.” Over the years, the disease steals from him his artistic skills and the perception of himself, but he keeps painting till the end, giving to his artworks the most profound piece of his soul.
